Grooming

Taking good care of your dog is very important. A well cared for dog is less receptive to illnesses Taking care of your dog is not only an necessity but also fun: boss and dog are paying attention to eachother. This is the moment for a game and cuddles.

Grooming consists of regular brushing and/or combing and a control to see wheter your dog suffers from fleas, teaks, nails too long or an infection of the ear).
How often a dog needs to be brushed or combed depens on the age group and the length and structure of the coat. A Tibetan Terrier needs to be combed at least once a week and twice for an adult coat. At the age of around 9 months they swop their puppycoat for an adult coat and thus they need to be brushed and combed more often as the coats tangles easily. If they are not combed often enough the only option is the trimmer and this is not what we want because we chose a longhaired dog!!

Use the correct material when grooming. The combs cannot be too sharp. Chose a brush with metal pins and metal combs with different distances between the teeth. Brush or comb always from head to tail in the direction of the hair. It is best to tackle the coat layer by layer. Use one hand to lift the hair upwards and start on the belly side. In taking layer after layer the complete coat will be combed. Working this way avoids missing out on tangles. The coat can then be combed with a finer comb.
Tangles often appear in the armpit, the groin and behind the ears. Do not forget to control these areas often! It is up to you to determine how long you brush. The more often you brush the less time it takes to get the coat tangle free and clean.

An indication is every day 10 minutes, every other day 15-20 minutes. 2 X per week 30 minutes. If you don’t brush frequently time it will take you more time. Also the chance of damaging the coat increases.

The Tibetan Terrier can be washed regularly, you also use a condtioner on his coat which you rinse well, this will then facilitate brushing and combing. Give him a bath when he is little that way he gets used to water and the fohn. Always use shampoo and conditioner for dogs. Put him on a anti-slip mat and put him at ease. Be careful that no shampoo gets into his eyes or ears and rinse well. Before washing make sure he is well combed and no tangles are left in the coat.
